The Benefits of Traditional Metal Braces

Despite innovations in orthodontics like Invisalign and Six Month Smiles, choosing traditional metal braces does have some unique benefits that may make them the best choice for your orthodontic needs.

Most Versatile Option

Braces are more versatile and powerful than any other type of orthodontic treatment. They can be used to treat even the most severe bite and tooth positioning issues. If you have a complex case, braces are the best option for you.

Braces Are Fixed In Place

Invisalign and other “clear aligner” systems are removable. This increases convenience, but also means it’s easier to misplace or damage an aligner. Braces are fixed in place, so they are worn 24/7. This makes them particularly good for teens, who sometimes have trouble staying on track with clear aligner treatment.

Affordable

Metal braces are usually cheaper than other methods of orthodontic treatment, so they are a good choice for anyone who wants orthodontic treatment on a budget.

The Braces Process

After Dr. Gino has approved you for braces, he will schedule a follow-up where your braces will be placed. He will attach bands to your rear teeth, along with brackets on the front teeth. An “archwire” will be run through these brackets, and held in place using elastic bands. Depending on your case, additional components like headgear tubes may also be placed.

It will usually take 1-2 hours to have your braces put on. After they’ve been attached to your teeth, they will be adjusted for the first time, and you’ll come back to Dulles Life Smiles every few weeks for further adjustments. This basic process will continue until your treatment is complete!

Braces can take anywhere from 1-3 years, and some patients may wear them for even longer than this. It all depends on the extent of your orthodontic issues. After you get a consultation with Dr. Gino, he will provide you with an estimate for how long your treatment will take.

What to Expect With Braces

You will need to come into Dulles Life Smiles about every 4 weeks for an adjustment, in most cases. Dr. Gino will check your mouth to make sure everything looks good, and adjust the wires and other components of your braces to shift your teeth. For a day or so after your adjustment, you will typically feel some discomfort and pressure on your teeth, but this will go away quickly.

It may be harder for you to care for your teeth, since the braces make brushing and flossing more difficult. You will still need to brush 2-3 times per day. Dr. Gino may recommend that you use a water flosser instead of floss if you’re having trouble flossing your teeth.

In addition, you will have some dietary restrictions. You should not eat extremely hard foods like popcorn kernels or chips, gummy foods like gummy bears or fruit snacks, or sticky foods like toffee and caramel. These can all damage your braces. Dr. Gino will give you a full list of foods to avoid after you receive your braces.
